“Provincial Dances” showed its first performance in 1990. Today the repertoire of the company includes 15 productions along with independent dance/ movement miniatures. The choreographers Joachim Schloemer and Christine Brunel (Germany), Anouk van Dijk (Netherlands) created performances exclusively for the company. At the moment the company consists of ten dancers and some apprentices, which are trained using the methods and techniques of various European and American dance schools including ballet and various movement techniques, such as release technique, yoga, body conditioning as well as other techniques that provide skills necessary for special projects, for example acrobatics, voice and speech training. Continuing personal and professional growth is a priority in the technology of the body development for the company members.
The company became known both in Russia and internationally as an original avant-garde dance company with performances that synthesize choreography, movement and theater arts, creating the unique and easy to recognize style. The company strives to be fluid, constantly looking for new ideas, information and means of visual expression. It focuses not on becoming a strict structure, but on interaction with various art forms. However, rather than concentrating on the creation of a synthetic form, the company tries to acquire new forms of expression through the process. As the performance is created, the technique becomes the exploration of the art form and at times the tool to release the intuitively found content. Therefore, the idea defines the choice of the means of expression. Any person who can ultimately express the image, idea or bring new information hypothetically can become a member of the company or a participant of the performance.
Provincial Dances is not trying to represent a phenomenon of “Russian” (it is simply a part of the mentality), but to create something that has timeless, cosmopolitan, nationality-free and yet personal character. That’s why the company does not provide librettos for its performances, since they would call for a structure, but leaves space for free interpretation inviting the audience to join in emotionally. Regardless of the fact that one may find the esthetics of the performance interesting or not, it is important that every one finds their own understanding and meaning in it.The esthetics of
"Provincial Dances" are based on strict subordination of the outer movement to inner motions. The synthesis of music, artistic expression, movement, light, costumes led by the single creative idea is the main principle of the company's "system". The theatre is one of the first avant-garde troupes at post-reform Russia and is the closest of all Russian troupes to the theater avant-garde». (The weekly magazine "Culture", September 1999).
The company performance season usually includes 3-4 performances in Ekaterinburg with 1-2 premieres, as well as tours and participation in international festivals or competitions.
"Provincial Dances" actively collaborate with famous Russian artists, fashion designers, musicians and composers (A. Pantykin, M. Vedernikova, O. Pautova, S. Basharina, art group "?N??").
